On the farm

A New bed

In preparation for spring we have started a new bed. At present there is a good layer of unfinished compost covered with black plastic. Around November we will make small holes in the plastic and plant pumpkins in this space. By the time the plastic comes off the compost underneath should be lovely and mature. A great amendment for our heavy clay soil!

Spring prep

We are now planning our spring and summer crops. Seeds are being ordered, kumara are being rooted to produce slips and most importantly we are smasking the grass back in an attempt to keep it at bay for another season. This involves lots of cardboard, mulch and time.

Early spring crops

As well as the salad greens the poly tunnel is also currently home to quite a few spring cabbages with more under cover outside. As well as these we have Chinese cabbage, silverbeet, kale and beetroot which should all be ready in early spring.  We also have garlic in but that won't be ready until summer.
